Claims (6)

  1. WHAT IS CLAIMED IS: 1. A method of washing animal fibres including the step of treating the fibres with an emulsion comprising water, a surface-acti e agent and a fibre-grease solvent which is substantially non-volatile under the conditions of treatment , ( the solvent being present in the emulsion in an amount exceeding 4 percent by mass.
  2. 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the solvent natural grease- of an animal fibre or an oil .
  3. 3. A method according to claim 2 wherein the solvent is the natural grease of the animal fibre being treated.
  4. 4. A method according to claim 2 wherein the f ibres being treated are wool fibres and the solvent is wool grease.
  5. 5. A method according to any one of claims 2 to 4 wherein the solvent is grease present in the emulsion in an amount of from 6 to 20 percent by mass.
  6. 6. A method according to claim 2 wherein the solvent is selected from the group of Sunflower oil , liquid paraffin, oleine, castor oil , olive oil , Neats foot oil and whale oil . A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the fibres are wool fibres. .8. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the surface active agent is a detergent. 9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the detergent is a non-ionic detergent and is present in the emulsion in an. amount of from 2 to.6 percent by mass of the solvent phase. 1°· A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein grease-rich solvent is removed continuously or intermittently from the emulsion to maintain the emulsion within a predetermined solvent concentration range. 11. A method of washing' wool fibres inc'iuding the step of treating the fibre with an emulsion comprising water, a surface-active agent and wool grease, the wool grease being present in the emulsion in an amount exceeding 4 percent by mas s . 12. A method according to claim 11 wherein the wool grease is present in the emulsion in an amount of from 6 to 20 percent by mass. A method according to claim 11 or claim 12 wherein the surface active agent is a detergent. 1 . A method according to claim 13 wherein the detergent is a non-ionic detergent and is present in the emulsion in an amount of from 2 to 6 percent by mass of the grease phase. 15. A method according to any one of claims 11 to 14 wherein grease is continuously or intermittently removed from the emulsion to maintain the emulsion within a predetermined grease concentration range. 16. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the emulsion is maintained at a temperature of from 50° to 75°C during treatment. 17. A method of claim 1 substantially as herein described. 18. Washed animal fibres produced by a method according to any one of the preceding claims.
