Abstract

Fibrous materials, e.g. cotton, viscose rayon, cuprammonium rayon, cellulose acetate, nylon, polyester fibres, wool, paper and leather derived from cow hide, pig skin, goat skin or horse hide, are waterproofed, softened and rendered wrinkle resistant and tear resistant, by applying thereto a compound having the formula:- <FORM:1118268/D1-D2/1> in which y is 0 or 1, x is 2, 3 or 4 and R is the hydrocarbon radical of a polymeric fat acid obtained by polymerizing a fat acid which is a naturally occurring or synthetic monobasic aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid having a hydrocarbon radical of 8-24 carbon atoms and may be saturated, ethylenically unsaturated or acetylenically unsaturated acid, e.g. a mixture of oleic and linoleic acids. The fibrous material may be in the form of a woven or nonwoven fabric. The compound may be applied to the fibrous material in undiluted form, as a solution in an organic solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, hexane or heptane, or in the form of an aqueous emulsion, by immersion, brushing or spraying and may be cured at room temperature or at elevated temperatures. 0.1-10% by weight of the comopund may be applied to the fibrous material.
