Abstract

1,117,234. Builders' hoists. D. WICKHAM & CO. Ltd. 23 Aug., 1965 [28 Aug., 1964], No. 35375/64. Heading B8H. The mast 11 of a builders' hoist is provided with guides for a pair of independent cages 26, 27 and for a cathead 13 supporting a slewing-jib crane 21 and is adapted to be extended a section 12 at a time, each section being raised either by a cage or by the crane. The cathead 13 is provided with adjustable sprags 14 and with rams 22, 23 adapted to be connected to the cages at 38, 39, the cages also being provided with pivoted sprags 36, 37. To extend the mast, a section 12 is raised by the crane and deposited on the top of the mast. The cages 26, 27 are then raised by means of winches 24, 25 and coupled to the rams 22, 23 which are retracted to raise the cages until they are supported on the mast by the sprags 36, 37. The rams are then alternately extended while the cages are secured to the mast and the cathead 13 is released from it and retracted while the cathead is secured to the mast and the cages are released until the cathead is at the top of the additional mast section and the cages are just beneath it, Fig. 3 (not shown). Hoist cables 28, 29, secured at one end to lockable storage drums 31, 32 on the cages 26, 27, are adjusted to appropriate lengths for the new overall height of the mast. The rams are then extended until the cages are supported by the cables, after which the rams are disconnected and normal operation of the cages can be begun, Fig. 4 (not shown). The reeving of the cables 28, 29 is illustrated in Fig. 5 (not shown).
