Abstract

In a stuffer-box crimping apparatus such as described in the parent Specification, a roller feeding yarn into the compression chamber is driven from a pulley comprising at least two steps and a drive belt which, in response to initiating movement of a feeler sensing the level of crimped yarn in the chamber, is shifted between the steps to vary the speed of the roller and/or connect and disconnect the drive thereto and thus maintain the quantity of crimped yarn in the chamber constant. A flywheel mounted on the feed roller shaft retards the deceleration of the shaft when the drive is disconnected. The peripheral surface of the roller (or each of a pair of rollers) has microscopic grooves and ridges extending axially thereof to form an irregularly roughened surface for improving the frictional grip of the roller on the yarn.
