Cigars or similar shaped objects fed continuously by a conveyer 1 (Fig. 1) are batched by a hopper 4, 5, the input to which is cut off at fixed intervals while the hopper releases its contents to a plate 8 which is lowered within a compartment 6 of. a container. In the form described, the container is then moved by a conveyer (15) (Fig. 3, not shown) through the width of one compartment so that the operation may be repeated in the next compartment. A time-controlled photo-electric cell 7 controls the downward movement of the plate 8. The compartments in the conveyer 1 may each receive more than one article. The feed to the hopper may be closed by sliding a pair of rods 3 (Fig. 1, and Fig. 2, not shown) over the top of the hopper. The rods 3 may be propelled by lugs on the conveyer 1, and may be subsequently retracted by springs; alternatively, the rods may be driven from a cam. The articles are released from the hopper by pivoting flaps 5. The compartments in the containers may be formed by partitions (14) (Fig. 3) mounted on a removable front cover (13). The bottom of each compartment is formed by spaced rails (16), (17) (Fig. 2) which rest on guides 20.
