1301894 Cigarette packages E H GELDMACHER 1 May 1970 [8 May 1969 7 Aug 1969 (3)] 21130/70 Heading B8C In a method of producing cigarette packages, a foil 2 is fed from a roll 1 over guides 3, 4, 5 and on to a drum 6 where it is heated by a device 8 for drawing, by vacuum, into recesses in the drum 6 to form in the foil 2 corresponding recesses 15, 16, each with adjacent troughs to receive individually the cigarettes, the foil 2, after having its edges trimmed by wheels 10 and oblique cuts 17, 18 made by knives 14 to form caps 19, 20, passing, as indicated at 9, to a filling drum 21 which has recesses corresponding to those in the foil and above which is situated a distributer device 23 with a pair of rollers 26 to deliver cigarettes, one by one, into the troughs in the recesses 15, 16. A covering foil 30 fed from a roll 27 and trimmed at 28, is passed round a roller 29 on top of the filled, recessed foil and is secured thereto by welding. Opening threads 33, 34 and covering foils 37, 38 are supplied respectively from rolls 32, 33 and 35, 36 are laid over the slits 17, 18, the foil then passing through cutting and folding devices 39, 40, 41 before passing to a separating device 44 in which the lateral trimming operations are undertaken. In addition to the cigarette receiving recesses, other deep drawn parts may be formed in the foil on the drum 6 for the insertion for instance of a small package of matches, or a coin for change. The foil 9 has a central part 52 cut away, Fig. 2, before the covering foil 30 is applied thereto. In an alternative method of feeding cigarettes to the drum (120), Fig. 10 (not shown), the cigarettes are fed, one by one, on to a conveyer (103) which passes them to conveyers (111) and (113), for delivery to a device (118) which correctly places the cigarettes for insertion in the grooves (119) of the drum (120). The conveyers (103), (113) are acted upon respectively by vibrators (105, 113) to shake off loose cigarette particles which pass respectively through sieves (107, 115) to receptacles (108,116) connected respectively by pipes (109, 117) to a vacuum source. Nozzles (112) adjacent the conveyer (111) direct steam towards the ends of the cigarettes. A fold can be provided between each cigarette trough so that a cylindrical package can be formed.
