Colloidal elements and compounds. -In deflocculating solids such as graphite, lamp-black, amorphous pigments, &c., by grinding with a deflocculating agent, such as tannin solution, which may be ammoniacal, as d e s c r i b e d in Specifications 7775/07, and 7776/07, [both in Class 90, Non-metallic elements], 27312/07, 463/10, and 4155/12, the mixture of solid and deflocculating agent in paste form is subjected to alternate periods of attrition and of relative rest. The paste 6 is placed in one side of a hopper 4, Fig. 1, containing a driven roller 1 of iron or steel covered with canvas, and is ground between the roller and the bed-plate 3, and transferred to the other side of the hopper. After a period of rest, the direction of rotation of the roller is reversed, and the paste is again transferred beneath the same. A fixed scraping blade 7 may be used to remove the paste from the roller. The paste may pass from a hopper 10, Fig. 2, below a series of rolls 1 in a horizontal trunk or may pass down a vertical trunk containing a number of pairs of rolls driven at different peripheral speeds, each pair being separated by a grid through which the paste passes.
