Abstract

1,114,070. Metallurgical converters. HARBISON-WALKER REFRACTORIES CO. 7 July, 1966 [30 July, 1965], No. 30499/66. Heading F4B. In a metallurgical converter, an annular zone or knuckle area 24 of sector shaped cross-section between a concave upwardly opening bottom zone 18 of the working lining and a barrel zone 20 thereof is substantially filled with contiguously abutting refractory bricks 50, Fig. 4, of parallelogram cross-section, the bricks extending from contiguous the lowest bricks of the barrel zone to contiguous the outermost bricks of the bottom zone entirely around the annular zone. The skew end surfaces 46 of the knuckle area bricks may abut the face surfaces of the lowest bricks in the barrel zone as shown in Fig. 4, or the face surfaces of the terminal inclined outermost bricks of the bottom zone. The remaining voids in the knuckle area are filled with monolithic refractory material 58.
