Abstract

1,113,598. Metallurgical converters. BARBISON-WALKER REFRACTORIES CO. 16 Sept., 1966 [20 Sept., 1965], No. 41487/66. Heading F4B. A metallurgical converter has an outer metal shell 12, a refractory lining 14 in contact with the interior of the shell and a prefabricated inclined taphole assembly 30, comprising two superposed pairs of refractory bricks. A brick 32b of the upper pair contains a groove 36 in the face surface 38 thereof. This groove intersects the end surface 42 and the side surface 40. A brick 34b of the lower pair contains a groove 44 that intersects the end surface 46 and the side surface 48. The other bricks of each pair are mirror images of the bricks 32b, 34b and when placed together so that the grooves mate with each other define a portion of the inclined taphole. Up to four pairs of bricks may be arranged one over the other to provide a continuous inclined taphole.
