Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises 67 to 73 parts, preferably 70 parts, of trimethylolpropane pelargonate and 33 to 27 parts, preferably 30 parts, of pentaerythritol dipelargonate di-2-methyl pentanoate for each 100 parts by weight of the total of the two esters, these two components forming at least 50% by weight of the whole composition. The mixture of esters may be used per se or may form the major proportion in a mixture with other lubricants. Up to 10% of a more viscous ester, e.g. a polyester from pentaerythritol, succinic anhydride and pelargonic acid may be included. Conventional additives may include phenylalphanaphthylamine, 2,21 - dipyridylamine, phenothiazine and a nickel, cobalt or zinc chelate formed from a salt of the metal, an amine, and salicyladehyde or 5-nitro-salicylaldehyde, the amine component being, e.g. aniline, p-phenoxy-aniline, p-phenoxyphenoxyaniline, o-toluidine, o-chloroaniline or 2-ethylhexylamine.
