Abstract

A binder for fibre materials consists of (A) an aqueous dispersion of 75-90 parts by wt. of a thermoplastic copolymer derived from 10-35% by wt. of a monohydroxy-dialkyl maleate or fumarate of formula ROOC-CH = CH-COOR1OH where R is a C4- 12 alkyl radical and R1 is a C2- 4 alkylene radical, 25-55% of styrene or a vinyltoluene, 10-60% of a C1- 12 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and 0-5% of acrylic or methacrylic acid, the components being chosen in such a way that the copolymer contains a total of 20-45% by wt. of alkyl groups of the ester residues being free from hydroxyl groups, and (B) 10-25 parts of an aminoplast precondensate which is a condensation product of formaldehyde and an aminotriazine, urea or dicyanodiamide, which product may be wholly or partially etherified with an aliphatic alcohol. The copolymer may be produced by polymerizing a mixture of (1) monoethylhexyl monohydroxyethyl maleate, monohydroxypropyl monobutyl maleate, monohydroxypropyl monoethylhexyl maleate, monohydroxyethyl monohexyl maleate or monohydroxyethyl monodecyl maleate, (2) styrene or vinyl toluene, (3) butyl acrylate, (4) ethylhexyl acrylate, and (5) acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, in an aq. mixture of (i) an alkyl sulphonate, an octadecyl alcohol/ethylene oxide condensate, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium persulphate and sodium pyrosulphite or potassium persulphate and sodium sulphite at a pH of 7. The precondensate may be trimethylolmelamine-trimethyl ether, hexamethylol melamine hexamethyl ether, or a methylol-melamine which has been methylated, ethylated or butylated. On heating the hydroxyl groups in the copolymer react with the aminoplast precondensates. The binder may also contain magnesium chloride or diammonium phosphate.ALSO:Fabrics, which may be non-woven are treated with a binder for fibre materials which consists of A an aqueous dispersion of 75-90 parts by wt. of a thermoplastic copolymer derived from 10-35% by wt. of a monohydroxy-dialkyl maleate or fumarate of formula:- ROOC - CH = CH - COOR1 OH where R is a C4-12 alkyl radical and R1 is a C2-4 alkylene radical, 25-55% of styrene or a vinyltoluene, 10-60% of a C1-12 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and 0-5% of acrylic or methacrylic acid, the components being chosen in such a way that the copolymer contains a total of 20-45% by wt. of alkyl groups of the ester residues being free from hydroxyl groups and B 10 - 25 parts of an aminoplast precondensate which is a condensation product of formaldehyde and an aminotriazine, urea or dicyanodiamide, which product may be wholly or partially etherified with an aliphatic alcohol. The non-woven fabric e.g. made from a mixture of wool and polyacrylonitrile and needle punched onto a fabric made from jute, is impregnated with the binder, which may also contain magnesium chloride and heated. Fabrics, e.g. of cotton, polyester polyamide, glass fibres or polypropylene may be printed with a paste consisting of the binder, on emulsion thickening, diammonium phosphate and a pigment dyestuff and then heated.
