Abstract
Textiles are treated with aqueous dispersions or emulsions containing natural and/or synthetic rubber and, in greater amount, an aminoformaldehyde condensate having methylol groups available for reaction with the rubber. The aminoplast may be urea or melamine formaldehyde etherified with propanol or butanol and may be modified with an alkyd resin, e.g. adipic acid-trimethylolpropane. The synthetic rubber may be butadiene-acrylonitrile or styrene-butadiene and other optional components of the compositions include polyvinyl alcohol, polymethyl acrylate, casein and gelatine and various textile adjuvants, e.g. pigments, dyes, mothproofing agents, bactericides.ALSO:Muslin and other loose-weave fabrics of cotton and/or regenerated cellulose are impregnated with an aqueous dispersion or emulsion, which may be in the form of a foam, containing a natural and/or synthetic rubber and a waterinsoluble amino-formaldehyde resin precondensate which has methylol groups available for cross-linking with the rubber, the amount of resin precondensate in the dispersion being greater than the amount of rubber, and the fabrics are then heated. The resin may be a condensate of urea or melamine with formaldehyde and may be modified with an alkyd resin and etherified with butanol or propanol. The composition may include other resins, pigments, dyes, optical brighteners, water-repelling agents, mothproofing agents, fireproofing agents and bactericides. In Example (1) a dispersion containing a urea-formaldehyde condensate etherified with butanol and modified with an adipic acid-trimethylol propane resin, a sulphonated fatty acid, casein and ammonium nitrate, and having a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, is added to a neutralized dispersion containing buta-adiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, acrylonitrile, a fatty alcohol sulphonate and gelatine, and is applied as a foam to a low-grade fabric which is heated at 100 DEG C. A further application at higher solids content is then made. In Example (2) the treating composition comprises butylated urea-formaldehyde, polymethyl acrylate, butadiene-styrene copolymer and polyvinyl alcohol. In this example, a second application of a melamine-formaldehyde precondensate is made. In Example (3) the treating composition comprises melamine-formaldehyde and a natural rubber latex.
