Abstract

Textile materials comprising interlocked yarns of proteinaceous fibres, e.g. woven and knitted fabrics made from wool, silk, mohair or synthetic fibres made from casein, soybeans, zein or collagen alone or in admixture with cotton, linen, viscose rayon, nylon or polyacrylonitrile, are skrink-proofed by impregnating them with an aqueous dispersion of a water insoluble linear addition copolymer containing 0.5-6% by weight of N-methylolamide units of the formula <FORM:0968385/D1-D2/1> in which R is hydrogen or methyl, the balance of the copolymer being constituted by compatible units derived from one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers the copolymer having a second order transition temperature of 0 DEG C. or less, and then drying and heating them, e.g. at 212 DEG -400 DEG F. for 1/2 -30 minutes, to cure the copolymer. The copolymer may comprise units derived from one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers p which contain a group reactive with the N-methylolamide group, e.g. an amine, amide, hydroxyl or carboxyl group, such as acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid methacrylamide, bhydroxyethylacrylate or methocrylate, N-b hydroxyethyl acrylamide or methacrylamide, b hydroxylpropyl acrylate or methacrylate, N-b-hydroxypropylacrylamide or methacrylamide, b hydroxyethyl or propylvinyl ether or sulphide, b amine ethylvinyl ether or b amine ethylacrylate, the N-methylolamide units and the coreactive monomer units together constituting not more than 25% by weight of the copolymer. The remainder of the copolymer may comprise C1-C18 alkylacrylates and/or C4-C16 alkyl-methacrylates, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate or styrene. The copolymers may be graft or block copolymers. The treating composition may also contain an acid or acidic substance. As catalyst, e.g. formic, oxalic, sulphuric or phosphoric acid, ammonium phosphate, thiocyanate or chloride, a salt of a hydroxyaliphatic amine, pyridine hydrochloride or benzyldimethylamineoxalate an aminoplast precondensate or a polyepoxide 1.
