Abstract

1398787 Bonded fibre fabrics CIBA-GEIGY AG 2 Aug 1972 [4 Aug 1971] 36037/72 Heading D1R [Also in Division C3] A preparation for reinforcing non-woven fabrics by a foaming process comprises (a) at least one binder, which is preferably an epoxy resin modified with a fatty amine and a basic polyamide or a dicarboxylic acid, and (b) a foaming assistant which is an aminoplast precondensate which is surface active until rendered insoluble by heating. The aminoplast (b) preferably contains at least one methylol group etherified with a monohydric alcohol of at least 4 C atoms and at least one methylol group etherified with a hydroxy-amine, a polyethylene glycol, an alkali metal salt of a sulphonated polyol, and/or an aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid. The non-woven materials may consist of fibres of polyamide, viscose, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polypropylene or glass; they are treated with a solution of the components (a) and (b) which is foamed with air, then dried and heated to 60-190‹C to deactivate the surfactant aminoplast. In Examples reactive surfactants I to X are made from melamine or urea with 6 or 2 mols respectively of formalin, etherified with butanol and/ or a fatty alcohol, or a monomethylolurea butyl and/or fatty alcohol ether with formalin, further etherified with a polyethylene glycol or butyl glycollate or ethyl lactate, and optionally further treated with triethanolamine or sodium sulphite; and binders A to G are made from a bisphenol A/epichlorhydrin epoxy resin modified with a fatty amine (except E) and glycol butyl ether or methanol or isopropanol, then with a polymerized linseed oil acid diethylene triamine polyamide or a hexamethylene or neopentyl glycol/sebacic acid mixture, and optionally lastly with epichlorhydrin, dichlorhydrin, acrylamide or an MF precondensate; these surfactants and binders are dissolved in water with ethyl-, hydroxyethyl-, or carboxymethyl-cellulose as thickener, with or without formic or acetic acid and/or MgCl 2 as hardening catalyst, foamed with air and used to impregnate polyester, polyamide, viscose or needled polyester fleeces, which are then cured at 90-140‹C for 5-10 minutes.
