Abstract

A water soluble composition, for imparting to cellulose-containing textile materials wrinkle recovery, shrinkage control and improved textile strength, comprises a methylolated tetrahydro-s-triazinone or alkylated derivative thereof and a polymethylol melamine or alkylated derivative thereof, said triazinone having the general formula:- <FORM:0887375/IV (a)/1> <FORM:0887375/IV (a)/2> wherein R represents alkyl, monoolefinically unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, halogenoalkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl; and R1 represents an alkylene group containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms which may be substituted by alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, halogen or dialkylamino groups. The triazinone and melamine components may be partly present in low order polymeric form. The composition is applied to the textile material in aqueous solution and in the presence of 0,1 to 25%, based on the solids content of the composition, of an accelerator of which there are specified phosphoric and oxalic acids; amine and alcohol amine salts; and ammonium and magnesium chlorides. The compositions used in the examples comprise (1) a fully methylated hexamethylol melamine and a resinous triazinone of Formula I in which R is ethyl (2) a trimethyl trimethylol melamine and a triazinone of Formula I in which R is 3-methoxy propyl (3) a trimethyl pentamethylol melamine and a triazinone of Formula I in which R is ethyl and (4) a fully etherified, fully methylolated melamine and a triazinone of Formula II in which R1 is ethylene. The composition may be employed with other textile finishing resins of which there are mentioned urea- and substituted urea-formaldehyde resins and their alkylated derivatives, phenol-formaldehyde resins, acetoneformaldehyde resins, polyglycidyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols; homo- or copolymers of acrylates or copolymers of acrylates with substituted or unsubstituted styrene, acrylonitrile or polyvinyl chloride.ALSO:A process for finishing a cellulose-containing textile material to impart wrinkle recovery, shrinkage control and improved tensile strength thereto comprises applying to the material from an aqueous solution a triazine-triazinone composition and an accelerator and curing the composition to a water-insoluble state, said triazine-triazinone composition comprising a polymethylol melamine or an alkylated derivative thereof and a methylolated tetrahydro-s-triazinone having the general formula as follows or an alkylated derivative thereof <FORM:0887375/IV (c)/1> or <FORM:0887375/IV (c)/2> wherein R represents alkyl, monoolefinically unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, hydroxyalkyl alkoxyalkyl, aminoalkyl halogenoalkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl; and R1 represents an alkylene group containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms which may be substituted by halogen atoms or alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy or dialkylamino groups. The triazinone and melamine components may be partly present in low order polymeric form. Accelerators specified include phosphoric and oxalic acids, amine and alcohol amine salts, and ammonium and magnesium chlorides. The composition may be applied by immersion, padding or spraying followed by a process such as squeezing or hydroextraction. The cellulose-containing material contains at least 50% of cellulose and may be cotton, viscose or linen which may be blended with a nylon, an acrylic, a polyester or wool. The textile material may be in the form of filaments, yarns, fibres or fabrics (felted, woven or non-woven). The composition may be employed with other textile-finishing resins of which many are specified.
