Abstract
A binder for fibres consists of (A) an aqueous dispersion of 75-90 parts by wt. of a thermoplastic copolymer derived from 10-35% by wt. a monohydroxydialkyl maleate or fumarate of formula, ROOC-CH = CH-COOR1OH where R is a C4- 12 alkyl radical and R1 is a C2- 4 alkylene radical, 85-50% of at least one vinyl ester of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and 0-15% of a C4- 10 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and (B) 10-25 parts of an aminoplast precondensate which is a condensation product of formaldehyde and an aminotriazine, urea or dicyanodiamide and which may be wholly or partially etherified with an aliphatic alcohol. The copolymer may also contain less than 5% of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The copolymer may be produced by polymerizing a mixture of (1) monohydroxyethyl monoethylhexyl maleate, vinyl acetate and optionally ethylhexyl acrylate and acrylic acid, (2) monohydroxypropyl monobutyl maleate, vinyl acetate and vinyl isohexylate, (3) monohydroxybutyl monoamyl maleate, vinyl acetate and a vinyl ester of a mixture of C9- 11 saturated tertiary carboxylic acids, (4) monohydroxypropyl monooctyl maleate, vinyl acetate and ethylhexyl methacrylate, (5) monohydroxyethyl monohexyl maleate, vinyl acetate and vinyl laurate in an aqueous mixture of a nonylphenol ethylene oxide condensate, an alkyl sulphonate and sodium bicarbonate at a pH of 7 (using sodium carbonate) or in an aqueous mixture of an alkyl sulphonate, ammonium persulphate and sodium sulphite. The precondensate may be a condensation product of formaldehyde and melamine, e.g. trimethylolmelamine-trimethyl ether or a methylolmelamine which has been partially etherified with ethanol, isopropanol or butanol or dimethylol urea dimethyl ether. The binder may also contain magnesium chloride or di-ammonium phosphate. On heating the binder the hydroxyl groups in the polymer react with the aminoplast precondensate.ALSO:Fabrics, which may be non-woven, are treated with a binder for fibres which consists of A an aqueous dispersion of 75-90 parts of wt. of a thermoplastic copolymer derived from 10-35% by wt. of a monohydroxy dialkyl maleate or fumerate of formula: ROOC - CH = CH - COO R1OH where R is a C4-12 alkyl radical and R1 is a C2-4 alkylene radical, 85-50% of at least one vinyl ester of an aliphatic mono carboxylic acid and 0-15% of a C4-10 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and B 10-25 parts of an aminoplast precondensate which is a condensate product of formaldehyde and an aminotriazine, urea or dicyanodiamide and which may be wholly or partially etherified with an aliphatic alcohol. A non-woven fabric made from polyester fibre by needle punching is impregnated with an aqueous solution of the binder and magnesium chloride or diammonium phosphate and heated for 5 min. at 150 DEG C. A non-woven fabric made from polyacrylonitrile is impregnated with the above solution and then needled onto a ground fabric made from jute and heated for 8 min. at 130 DEG C. Cotton polypropylene or polyester fabric is printed with a paste consisting of the binder a pigment dyestuff diammonium phosphate and an emulsion thickening. A cotton twill is padded with an aqueous mixture of the binder, a pigment dyestuff and diammonium phosphate.
