A discharge lamp, particularly a xenon lamp, is supplied after ignition from a D.C. source through a transformer winding, one part of which is connected to a valve as transistor starting oscillator tuned by a variable capacitor C to the natural frequency of the lamp circuit, the capacitance of which is formed by the inherent capacity of the winding &c.
