Abstract

1358829 Supply circuits for discharge lamps THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 July 1972 [20 July 1971] 54080/73 Divided out of 1354723 Heading H2H A ballast circuit for a discharge lamp 42 comprises first and second input terminals 40 connectible to an alternating voltage source, first and second output terminals 41 for supplying a misdirectional voltage to the lamp, a capacitor 49, an inductor 50 and three pairs of oppositely poled diodes 46, 48; 52, 56; 54, 58. The current supplied to the lamp includes a large D.C. component and a ripple at a frequency four times the supply frequency. The supply of D.C. to the lamp eliminates flicker and the voltage across the lamp is sufficient to strike a high pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp.
