Abstract

1,112,136. Liquefied gas storage tanks. LINDE A.G. 25 Aug., 1966 [26 Aug., 1965], No. 38160/66. Heading F4P. The generally flat self-supporting inner walls of a liquefied gas storage tank are formed by welding together the inturned resilient edges 22, Fig. 6, of adjacent metal plates 5 having had their corners cut off at 45 degrees, Fig. 5, and then welding the cut-off edges at the junctions of every four plates 5 to the inturned edges 23 of a square trough plate 6, each of which is secured at its centre by a screw joint 7 of low thermal conductivity which extends through slabs of heat-insulating material 3, 4 to the wall of an outer container 2; the head of each joint 7 being sunk into a bush 24 and sealed by a cap 25. The welded edges 23, 22 of each trough 6 and plate 5 are recessed at 23<SP>1</SP>. In a modification the main plates 5<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 9, with their corners cut bff are flat, and the edges 43 of each trough plate 6<SP>1</SP> are bent inwardly through 180 degrees and are welded to the cut-off edges 42 of plates 5<SP>1</SP>. The uncut-off edges 42 of adjacent plates 5<SP>1</SP> are welded to the edges 41 of gutter members 6<SP>11</SP> formed by bending through 180 degrees opposite edges of metal strip. Each corner of a trough plate 6<SP>1</SP> is closed by an end plate 44 which has an inwardly extending arcuate portion 45 between the gutter edges 41. The end of the gutter is welded at its edge 46<SP>1</SP> to an end plate 46 having an arcuate portion 47 mating with portion 45 of plate 44. The liquid contacting walls of either construction may be secured by screw joints 7 to a similarly constructed wall located between it and the wall of the outer container 2. The insulating material comprises foamed P.V.C. slabs connected together by spring strips of synthetic plastic or stainless steel cemented in slots cut in the slabs. Aluminium foil may be interposed between superposed slabs.
