Abstract

111,144. Reading, H. C. Nov. 13, 1916. Valves; valve-gear.-In an engine of the type comprising a mushroom inlet valve and a sleeve or sleeve-poppet exhaust valve actuated independently of the inlet valve and the engine piston, the exhaust valve encircles the inlet port and the piston slides in contact with the fixed engine cyclinder. In one form, Fig. 1, the inlet port 1 is controlled by a mushroom valve 2, and circumferential exhaust ports 4 leading to an annular exhaust space 5 are controlled by the sleeve valve 3. In a modification, Fig. 3, the exhaust valve 11 works on a seating 13 surrounded 'by an annular exhaust space 18 connected to an outlet 19, and is connected by arms to a bridge-piece sliding on an extension 22 of the cylinder head. The bridge-piece is provided with a fixed collar 23 and a sliding collar 24 upheld by a spring 25, and a valve-actuating lever controlled by a double-acting cam. engages between the collars 23, 24.
