Abstract

1,111,358. Flare burners. LUMMUS CO. 12 Aug., 1966 [12 Aug., 1965], No. 36273/66. Heading F4T. In a flare burner arrangement for burning refinery waste gases the installation 10 is rectangular with end walls 12 and side walls 14 in which are located Venturi burners 16 provided with flare gas through separate conduits each feeding different numbers of burners, sufficient air being supplied for smokeless burning and the burners being controlled so that only such sets of burners as are required to completely burn the gases, are operated. One form of control includes a water seal drum 60 having compartments 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72 of gradually increasing size connected to the conduits feeding the burners, water being maintained at a given height in each compartment by means of a pipe 71. Gas to be flared is passed into a header 82 and thence into non. duits, of increasing diameter, 84, 86, 88, 90, 92, 94 leading into the compartments. As the gas pressure increases the seals are blown in turn to bring into action further burners, the arrangement being that the burners operate at at least 60% of their cumulative capacity to ensure smokeless burning. Alternatively control may be by analogue or digital devices operating valves in seriatim in response to gas pressure.
