Abstract

In an internal combustion engine a cylinder 2 is closed by the inner wall 12 of a cylinder head 3 with a gasket 4 therebetween, the head has an outer wall 13, a partition 14 between and spaced from walls 12 and 13 and ducts 16, 17, e. g. for valves, injection nozzles or spark plugs, whose walls connect the partition and inner wall, and a web 15 connecting the partition and inner wall is of undulating form with respect to the gasket. The web 15 is undulating in that its axial projection crosses the gasket 4 a number of times. A passage 8 in a connecting element 5 provides a flow path for cooling water between the cylinder liner 2 and the head 3. In further embodiments, Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown), two and three valve per cylinder heads are illustrated, the undulating webs (33, 43, 53, 64) being of differing forms and additional webs (34, 44, 46, 53, 65) being provided spaced from the walls of the ducts between the partition and inner wall.
