Abstract
1,110,212. Propelling air-cushion vehicles and ships. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 23 April, 1965 [24 April, 1964], No. 17204/64. Headings B7K and B7V. An air-cushion vehicle for operation over water or a ship is propelled by a plurality of discs of which the lower parts only are immersed in the water. The vehicle is supported on a cushion 9 contained by a fluid curtain 8 at the rear of which are mounted on a transverse drive-shaft 2 a plurality of spaced-apart discs 1 driven through engines and gearing 16. Shaft 2 is carried by blocks movable in slides 13 by actuating mechanism 14. Alternatively, the discs may be mounted on pivotable arms which carry the drive to shaft 2, the purpose being to vary the depth of immersion of the discs. The discs may be within the cushion space or they may be mounted along fixed side-walls, and further discs may be used in association with partial walls to sub-divide the cushion space. Deflectors may be mounted above and aft of the discs to derive a propulsive effect from the water thrown up by the discs. The surfaces of the discs may be dimpled or corrugated or each disc may be formed as an inflatable component. An embodiment is described (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown), in which a disc is composed of sectors which may be rotated about radial axes to function as paddles.
