Abstract
1,095,775. Propelling air cushion vehicles and ships. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. April 23, 1965 [April 24, 1964], No. 17203/64. Heading B7K and B7V. An air cushion vehicle or a ship is propelled by a paddle wheel 1, driven from engine 17 and shafting 18, and comprising a shaft 4 carrying plates 5 formed with pivots 7 for a plurality of hook-shaped paddle blades 6. In operation the blades extend radially under centrifugal forces when out of the water, but when in contact with the water they are drawn substantially parallel to the surface. The blades may be formed without hooked ends and constructed of flexible material, and they may be mounted on the outer surface of an inflatable cylinder. An arrangement for varying the depth of immersion is described, and means may be provided for collecting water thrown up by the blades for use as a propulsive jet, or for injection into the fluid curtain of an air cushion vehicle or for use as engine cooling water.
