Abstract
1,138,861. Air cushion vehicles; propelling marine craft. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 7 Feb., 1966 [12 Feb., 1965], No. 6299/65. Headings B7K and B7V. An air cushion vehicle for operation over water, or a ship, is propelled by two helicoidal propellers arranged with their thrust axes at an inclination to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle or ship, the hand and direction of rotation of the propellers being respectively opposite so that lateral components of thrust are balanced. In the embodiment an air cushion vehicle 10 is provided at its rear end with supports for a pair of vaned helicoidal propellers 21 the axes of which converge rearwardly on opposite sides of a pair of guide plates 27 supported by a bearing plate 28 which carries at its rear end a rudder 30, the guide plates serving to divert rearwardly the inwardly-directed flow of water from the propellers. The propellers are driven by hydraulic motors 25 and they are supported by thrust bars 32 which may incorporate linkage (Fig. 8, not shown) whereby a jack may operate the linkage to vary the angle of inclination of the propellers to the vehicle axis. Further support is provided by vertical stays 33, 34 which may be varied in length in order to vary the depth of immersion of the propellers. In order that this adjustment may be made in response to wave movements a servo mechanism is provided wherein the height of the propellers is adjusted in response to wave height and speed of the vehicle. The propellers may be rotated at differing speeds and directions to provide a control effect on the vehicle.
