Abstract

1491247 Water jet propulsion BRUNSWICK CORP 12 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 48907/74 Heading B7V A water jet propulsion unit includes a deflector nozzle 22 for steerage and trim control and an auxiliary rudder 19 whose respective steering axes 12, 55 are offset and which are interconnected by a pair of depending arms 56, 57 of the nozzle 22 slidably engaging an upper portion of the rudder 19 so that the effect of the rudder 19 alters with the trim position of the nozzle 22. Consequently the rudder 19 improves steerage at low speeds with the nozzle 22 pointing downwards since the rudder axis 55 moves off of the steering axis 12 causing an amplified rudder movement for any angular movement of the nozzle 22. Conversely at high speed with nozzle 22 trimmed up, i.e. nearer to the horizontal, the rudder axis 55 moves closer to the steering axis 12 with a resultant reduction in angular movement of the rudder 19 for a given angular displacement of nozzle 22. The point of contact of the arms 56, 57 on the rudder moves arcuately with the nozzle 22 being moved from trim up to trim down or vice-versa along a path 59 (Fig. 5), e.g. between contact points 62 and 61 respectively or vice-versa. The nozzle 22 is mounted in a gimbal ring 14 which pivots about trim axis 15 on pins 30, 31 and which is secured to the nozzle 22 by pins 28, 29 defining the steering axis 12. A steering lever 33 is connected by a universal linkage 34 to the steering mechanism of the watercraft and an actuator 16 is connected by a link 17 to the ring 14 for trim control. A reversing gate 27 is provided to deflect the water jet through a reverse nozzle 44.
