Abstract

1,162,971. Manoeuvring ships. O.R. BATES. 24 Oct., 1966 [2 Aug., 1965], No. 32974/65. Heading B7V. Two scoops 14, 15 rotatable about vertical axes 12, 13 are disposed one on each side of the flume path 4 along which water is forced by the single screw of a ship, each scoop having a water deflecting surface curved about its vertical axis, the distance between vertical axes 12, 13 being equal to or greater than the total of the distances between the curved water deflecting surface of each scoop and its respective vertical axis. Vertical member 20 forming part of the ship's rudder and screw frame and having curved recesses 21, 22 in its side walls, a curved recess 23 in its rear wall and a pointed forward edge 24 divides the water path into two streams for each scoop to be movable into and out of a different one of the streams. In the slightly rotated position of the scoops indicated in Fig. 4 (not shown), the ahead speed of the ship is reduced with an unchanged speed and direction of rotation of the screw. With the greater rotation of the scoops of Fig. 5 (not shown), the ship moves astern and with both scoops rotated into the recesses 21, 22 the deflected streams of water are ejected sideways and there is no movement of the ship. The scoops can also rotate independently for the main engines to be available at full or reduced power to turn the ship's head. The stern of the ship may include housings into which the scoops are retractable.
