[Also in Division H5] In a method of compressing and heating arc plasma, e.g. for fusion, by directing an operating medium in rotationally symmetrical and radially concentric manner to a part of the length of an arc column established between two electrodes 3 and 4, the current strength of the arc is at least 10,000 amps and the hydrodynamic pressure of the operating medium is at least 50 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>. As shown, a liquid 1 is pumped through a pipe 12 and inlet aperture 11 to a cavity 20 in a ring 6 of insulating material e.g. sintered aluminium oxide or steatite or of conducting material e.g. steel, and emerges through a slot 5 extending around the entire inner periphery of the ring 6. The latter may comprise a number of parts.
