Abstract

1,109,486. Heavy current switches. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 13 April, 1965 [14 April, 1964], No. 15638/65. Heading H1N. A heavy current switch for shorting electrolytic cells comprises a conducting plate 3, mounted on one terminal 1 of the cell and carrying a main contact-bar 4 and a plurality of resiliently mounted arcing contacts 6 connected to plate 3 only by flexible braids 10, and a plurality of copper fingers 11 each carrying a main contact 5 and an arcing contact 7 and being mounted on a separate finger of a resilient laminated conductor 13 connected to the second terminal of the cell. The main contacts 4, 5 are faced with silver. The fingers 11 are moved to close the contacts by resilient plungers 27 individually mounted on a common actuating- rod (22) driven by a manual linkage (not shown) and they are moved to open the arcing contacts simultaneously by a bar 28 loosely attached to the rod (22). The arcing contacts 6, 7 are readily replaceable. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the bar 3 is bent downwards near the arcing contacts and main contact bar 4 is formed as a curved plate bolted to it.
