Abstract
1,109,271. Bolt fastenings. C. H. MILLINER. 29 March, 1965 [2 April, 1964], No. 13584/64 Heading E2A. A bolt comprises an attachment member formed with holes or otherwise adapted to enable it to be secured to a door, jamb or other member upon which the bolt is required to be mounted and affording a longitudinally extending guideway, and a bolt member 22 movable endwise in the guideway 'between a retracted position and a shot position in which one end of the bolt member is disposed respectively nearer to and further from the attachment member, such movement being effected by a bolt handle 24 formed on or fixed to the bolt member and projecting laterally therefrom at a position spaced rearwardly from said one end the bolt, being constructed to adaptably permit of alternative movement of the bolt member generally leftwardly or rightwardly from the retracted position to the shot position and having, in the guideway, a laterally presented gap between a forward tubular portion and a rear stop situated adjacent to opposite ends of the attachment member, flap means 19, and a mounting means for the flap means permitting the latter to move gravitationally and angularly parallel to a plane substantially at right angles to the direction of endwise movement of the bolt member into a position behind the bolt member and within the gap, automatically upon movement of the bolt member, irrespective of whether such movement is leftwardly or rightwardly to the shot position. In the construction shown the flap means comprises two flap members 19 pivoted on the attachment member about axes parallel or approximately parallel to that of the bolt member. Each is of L shape and only one is operative, depending whether the bolt is mounted for movement leftwardly or rightwardly to the shot position; in the case of the operative flap member one of its arms is raised to move gravitationally into a position behind the bolt member automatically upon movement of the latter to its shot position. The tubular portion 13 and the rear stop 17 of the attachment member are identical in shape and they exchange functions depending upon the direction of movement of the bolt member; the end portion of the bolt can be of cranked form for use when the door and its jamb are not in flush relationship. The handle can be detachable from the remainder of the bolt member and screwed into place.
