Abstract
1,193,616. Bumpers. WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd. 6 July, 1967 [6 July, 1966], No. 30306/66. Heading B7J. [Also in Division F2] In a shock-absorbing device (see Division F2) arranged with a vehicle bumper bar mounting, a die member 6 is arranged in a die-supporting block 18 at one end of an inclined tube 7 located at its forward end on a lug 8 secured to the corresponding frame member 3 of the vehicle and a steel bar 5 passes through the die and is adapted to be connected to the bumper bar 2 such that, upon impact, the steel bar 5 and the tube 7 telescope as extrusion of metal takes place to dissipate the kinetic energy. As shown in Fig. 1, the steel bar 5 is surrounded by a steel tube 14 which is longitudinally slotted at three equi-angularly spaced positions, the slots in the tube defining strips for passing through corresponding slots formed in the die-supporting block 18 at one end of the tube 7. The lower end of the tube 14 is adapted to be pivotally connected to a bracket 22 riveted to the bumper bar and suspended by a link 11 supported at its other end at 12 by the rear of the corresponding frame member 3 of the vehicle. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the end of the bar (5) which trails in the telescoping process is connected by means of shear bolts (24) to one end of a link (11) the other end of which is formed for pivotal connection to the vehicle body.
