Reefing gear for a sailing vessel having a mast and a rotatable boom comprises a gear housing 15 for attachment to the mast (via a lug 16), a spindle 1 fixed to the housing, an inner tubular telescopic member 2 surrounding the spindle and rotatably journalled to the housing, gearing 9, 10 inside the housing for rotating said telescopic member and locking same in any desired position of angular adjustment, and an outer telescopic member 4 secured to the boom 3 and slidably keyed to the inner telescopic member (at 11) for rotation therewith, the inner member projecting partially from the outer member towards the housing and the outer member having screw-threaded engagement 6, 7 with the spindle, whereby rotation of the inner member 2 will cause the outer member 4 (and the boom 3) to rotate and simultaneously be displaced axially along the spindle so that the length of the inner member projecting from the outer member, which length forms a reel for the bolt rope 5, will be varied, the bolt rope then being bound on this as the sail 13 is bound on the boom.
