Abstract

[Also in Group IX] A winding-machine of the kind in which yarn is traversed by a rotating scroll 20, Fig. 1, to cross wind the yarn on to a rotating spindle 10, is characterized by gearing that interconnects the scroll 20 and the spindle 10 such that the relative angularity of the spindle and the rotary traverse member can be varied in order to wind a parallel package, or a package having a predetermined conicity, without bringing any of the gears out of mesh. In Fig. 1 the spindle 10 is driven by a spiral gear 26 in a movable part 44 of the frame meshing with a spiral gear 28 in a stationary part of the frame. By temporarily slacking some bolts 46 the setting of the movable part 44 can be adjusted to vary the inclination of the spindle 10 without disengaging the gears 26, 28. The spiral gears could be replaced by bevel gears. As the package 16 increases in diameter the scroll 20 moves away from the spindle 10 by pivoting about an axis A-A. A spiral gear 30 dips into an oil bath to transfer oil to the spiral gears 26 and 28. In a modified construction, Fig. 4, the spindle 10 of the yarn package 16 is fixed in position but the scroll 20 is supported by a bracket 62 that can be locked in any desired setting about an axis 58. The axis of the scroll 20 and that of the spindle 10 may thus be parallel or at an angle to each other. The axis 58 comprises a spindle carrying spiral gears 55, 56 that mesh with spiral gears 54, 57 driving the spindle 10 and the scroll 20, respectively. The spiral gears 54, 55, 56, 57 may be replaced by bevel gears. As the yarn package 16 increases in size the scroll 20 moves away from the spindle 10 by pivoting about an axis A.
