Abstract

1,014,128. Boat steering gear. AMERICAN CHAIN & CABLE CO. Inc. Nov. 16, 1964 [Nov. 15, 1963], No. 46554/64. Heading B7V. In a boat steering device comprising a rotatable ring 21, a housing 10, 11 surrounding the rotatable ring, and a flexible member 38 adapted to be wound and unwound on the circumference of said rotatable ring and to pass tangentially with respect to said ring through an opening at 34 in said housing, the housing includes a separate curved member 42 fixed therewithin about substantially all of the circumference of the ring except where the flexible element passes tangentially therefrom through the housing opening, the curved member being of plastic material and having a smooth circular inner bearing surface opposed to the circumference of the ring and in slidable engagement with substantially the full length of the flexible member on the ring whereby the flexible member slides easily over and is restrained against outward displacement by said plastic bearing surface as the flexible member is wound and unwound by the ring.
