Abstract
<PICT:1108937/C6-C7/1> In a method of electro-chemical machining in which the workpiece forms the anode and the tool the cathode and electrolyte is present between them, relative rotation is effected between the tool and the surface of the workpiece and the working face of the tool comprises at least one electrically conducting area in the form of a sector bounded by radii extending from the axis of rotation, and at least one non-conducting area, whereby the current flowing is concentrated in the conducting surface areas of the tool. The electrolyte may be fed through an axial passage in the tool, to its working face. The conducting sectors may be slightly recessed below the non-conductive areas. The tool may be formed either of non-conductive material with an inset portion of conductive material, Fig. 2a (not shown) or may be formed of conductive material, part of the working pace being covered with non-conductive material e.g. lacquer Fig. 3 (not shown). The embodiment shown comprises a metal base portion 15 formed with a projecting segment 17 which occupies an area cut out of an insulating portion 16. Annular ridges 13, 14 are cut in both insulating material and the conducting area 17, so as to form corresponding annular grooves in the workpiece.
