Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and F2] A buffer device for intercepting rolling or sliding rolled stock comprises a stop 1 which is connected by a rod 2 to a piston 3 which works in a cylinder 4 the ends of which are connected, by respective conduits 5 incorporating check valve 6 and a common conduit 7, to a pressure accumulator 8 and to a common return conduit 12 through a throttle 9 and a pressure limiting valve 10 which are in parallel with a relief valve 11. The conduits 5 are also connected to two control conduits 13 which lead, through two valve combinations 17, to a control valve 14 and by further check valves 18 to a suction conduit 19. As shown in Fig. 3 strip coils 27 are selectively fed on inclined roller beds 28, 29 to an intermediate roller bed 30 which can be pivotably moved into alignment with one or other of the roller beds 28, 29. The stop 1 of the buffer is carried by a carraige 32 which is reciprocable in a guideway 31, the cylinder 4 being pivoted to the frame of the apparatus. The stop is in the left-hand position and is moved to the right until the coil 27 has been stopped liquid being forced from the right-hand cylinder chamber through the corresponding conduit 5 and check valve 6 and into the accumulator 8, a small amount of liquid being forced through the throttle 9 and the pressure limiting valve 10 to the return conduit 7 and the relief valve 11 not normally being effected. Liquid is sucked into the left-hand chamber of the cylinder 4 through the pipe 19 and the corresponding check valve 18 and pipe 5. The pressure accumulator (8) comprises a spring- loaded piston (23), Fig. 2 (not shown), which works in a cylinder (20). The coil 27 can be centred by operation of the control valve 14 to supply pressure fluid to the left-hand side of the piston 3 through the valve combination 17 which adjusts the speed of movement of the piston 3, the liquid in accumulator 8 meanwhile being discharged to the return conduit 12 through the throttle 9 and the limiting valve 10. When the coil has been centred for a subsequent processing step the control valve 14 can be actuated to move the stop to its initial position whereupon it is returned to its closed position ready for the next intercepting operation. If the coil 27 arrives from the right-hand roller bed 29 the same operations are performed in the opposite sense. In a single direction apparatus a strip (27), Fig. 5 (not shown), is arrested by a roller (1a which is carried by a pivoted arm (33) connected to the rod (2). When the centring operation has been completed the pivotal movement of the stop (1a is continued so that the table (36) of the coil carriage can be raised to remove the coil (27). In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a U-shaped roller bed (38) is provided. The pressure accumulator may consist of a cylinder with a bag filled with nitrogen or the spring (24), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be replaced by a gas cushion.
