Abstract

1,268,452. Metal strip feeds. WILHELMSBURGER MASCHINENFABRIK HINRICHS & SOHN. 6 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968], No. 23101/69. Heading B3W. In a strip metal feed device comprising an hydraulically-operated reciprocating gripper 10, during the final portion of at least the feed stroke the gripper is caused to decelerate by engagement of a cam rail 14 mounted on the gripper with a member, such as a spring-loaded roller 15, which causes a regulator valve 38 progressively to shut off the line 31 through which hydraulic fluid is being exhausted from the actuating cylinder 12 to return line 30. A similar cam rail and a roller 15<SP>1</SP> may provide for deceleration during the final portion of the return stroke also. The cam rails may be angularly adjustable or interchangeable with rails of differing configuration to vary the rate of deceleration and the length of the stroke during which it takes place. As shown, Fig. 3, hydraulic fluid is pumped to either end of the hydraulic piston-cylinder unit 12 via a slide control valve 21, non-return valves 36, 36<SP>1</SP> and regulator valves 38, 38<SP>1</SP>. To move the gripper in the feed direction 9<SP>1</SP> the slide 20 is moved to the left so that liquid is pumped through the line 32 to cylinder 12 and exhausted through regulator valve 38, a line by-passing the non-return valve 36 and a line 31 to the sump 18. Towards the end of the piston stroke the roller 15 runs up cam surface 54 and closes valve 38 which progressively shuts off the line 31 thus slowing down the grippers until at the end of the piston stroke the line is closed. The slide 20 is moved to the right for the return stroke during which roller 15<SP>1</SP> acts in the same manner as roller 15. A stationary gripper 2 is provided.
