1275281 Rolling FUNDITOR Ltd 25 Feb 1970 [26 Feb 1969] 10347/69 Heading B3M A marking unit for metals or plastics comprises a body 14, means 16, 18, 26, 34 for adjusting the initial position of the body and for reciprocating it with respect to a work-supporting surface 96, 98, Fig. 5, a marking head 57, e.g. a roller-die, slidably mounted on the body 14, and means 58 for reciprocating the marking head 57 with respect to the body. Cylindrical workpieces may be fed by a conveyer into the aperture 98 for marking on the end face. The marking head 57 is carried by a slide 48, Fig. 2, which is suspended in a passage 38 in the body 14 by a linear roller bearing 52, 53, 54. Abutments 62, 66, Fig. 4, at each end of the slide operate control valves 64, 74, and the slide is moved by a cylinder 58. The stroke of the slide may be increased by adding an extension to the body 14. A further cylinder 34, for moving the body 14 vertically, is connected thereto by a lever 26, Fig. 2, links 24, a screwed shaft 18 and a hand wheel 16 connected to the body and engaging screwthreads on the shaft to permit adjustment of the initial position of the body. A control valve 35 is operated by the lever 26 when the cylinder 34 is retracted, and a marker 78 associated with the adjustable valve 74 indicates its position. Control is by a valve operated by a pedal 100, lever, pilot valve or solenoid, a pressure regulator 110 and a lever 106 for single or repeat-stroke operation. The machine may be adapted for manual or hydraulic operation, but a pneumatic circuit, Fig. 6 (not shown), is described which, for single-stroke operation, lowers the body 14, to press the marking head against the work, and traverses the slide 48 to move the head across the work, the head remaining depressed until the pedal 100 is released. With the control 106 in the repeat position, the slide 48 continues to reciprocate in the depressed position.
