Abstract

1,107,656. Shell moulds; disposable patterns. HOWMET CORPORATION. 22 March, 1966 [15 April, 1965], No. 12578/66. Heading B5A. Shell moulds are formed by the "lost-wax'' process, using a pattern comprising a first portion, including at least one pattern member conforming to the configuration of articles to be moulded, and being of heat disposable material, and a second "crucible " portion, of heat resistant material, and releasably attached to said first portion; a ceramic shell is formed about the external faces of the pattern and the second "crucible" portion is removed therefrom before heating to remove said first portion. Said second " crucible " portion is preferably covered by a heat-disposable film, e.g. of plastics, which is removed by heating simultaneously with said first portion. The degree of cracking of the shell mould due to the expansion of the wax during removal is reduced in the region of the "crucible" portion by this means. Removal of wax may be effected by heating rapidly to a temperature considerably above the melting point so that the surface of the wax melts without through heating and consequent expansion and mould cracking. The heat disposable material may be wax or a plastics-wax mixture and the heat resistant material may be metal; there may be a threaded connection therebetween. A heat resistant rod may extend into said first portion, connected to the "crucible" portion and removable therewith.
