1,107,638. Direction indicating circuits. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Jan., 1967 [27 Jan., 1966], No. 3792/66. Heading G4H. [Also in Division H1] The direction of relative movement between two parts is indicated by a switch circuit on one part comprising two reed switches RS1, RS2, operable in succession by a magnet on the other part, the order of operation being determined by the direction of movement, there being corresponding relays RL1, RL2, each of which may be energized through a contact RL2/1, RL2/2 of the other, the first to be actuated serving to prevent the other being energized, and providing an output at T1 or T2 to indicate the direction of movement. The apparatus may be applied to indicate the amount of extension of a ram controlling a walking chock'in a coal-mine. There may be a series of magnets along the ram moving in turn past a pair of switches. Signals are given on appropriate leads according to the direction of movement and a reversible counter receiving the forward and backward signals indicates the position. Alternatively there may be a single magnet and a series of switch pairs, or a single magnet and a single switch pair on one part and a magnetic screen, e.g. of soft iron, passing between them on the other part, the screen having openings to allow the magnet to affect the switches.
