To enable trousers and skirts to be adjusted in girth at the fly or placket the tape 26 of a sliding clasp fastener is stitched to what is initially the rear face of the covered flap 20 with the teeth directed away from the edge 26a of the flap. In use, a greater or lesser width 30 of the flap, according to the girth of the wearer, is turned to the front of the garment. The covering flap 34 is secured to flap 20 by means of the sliding clasp fastener and a horizontal slide fastener 53 on the waistband portion of the covering flap is engaged with a concealed track 22 on the flap 20 to retain the covered flap folded to the required width. The flap 20 may be stitched at 37 to predispose it to fold at the position shown in Fig. 3, intermediate the fully expanded and contracted positions of Figs. 2 arid 4, respectively, (not shown). Various ways of folding and stitching the flap 20 to predispose it to adopt the intermediate positions are described and the sliding clasp fastener may be replaced by buttons and buttonholes, Fig. 14 not shown. In a modification, Figs. 10 and 11 not shown, the sliding clasp fastener tape is stitched to the rear face of the covered flap, the teeth projecting from the flap edge so that in the fully expanded position the flap is not turned towards the front of the garment at all.
