This invention relates to wearing apparel of that type requiring snug waist fit such as by way of example boys, youths, mens and ladies shorts, slacks, trousers, pajamas, skirts, bathing trunks, ski-pants, snow'suits and riding breeches or any other form of apparel requiring a snug waist fit.

The invention aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel having self-adjusting means as a part thereof whereby a snug waist fit is obtained when the article is worn.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner ashereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel not only possessing the characteristic of providing therefor a snug waist fit, but also the characteristic for body freedom when worn.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel possessing the characteristic of self-adjustment when worn.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel including'a waist portion, a buckle fixed to said portioncentrally of the front of thelatter, and a belt slidably connected with the outer face of said portion and having oppositely disposed end portions for slidably extending, in abuting relation through the buckle forrespectively maintaining said end portions coupled stationary with said waist portion and the belt in its adjusted position.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as herinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel including a split waist band having pairs of lengthwise overlapping parts, a set of adjusting elastic elements for the band arranged within and lengthwise of said parts, each of said elements being anchored to its correlated part, and'means carried by the outer ends of said elements for connecting the free ends of said parts together.

' The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as. hereinafter. set forth, a self adjusting article of wearing apparel including a split waist band. having pairs of lengthwise overlapping parts, a pocket structure including a shiftable outer wall merging into one of said parts and an inner stationary wall merging into the other of said parts, oppositely extending adjusting elastic. elements for the band arranged within and lengthwise of said parts, each of said elements being fixed at onepoint thereof in one of said parts, and means carried by said elements for detachably connecting the ends of said parts to said elements.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a self adjusting article of wearing apparel for providing a yieldable snug fit at the waist of the wearer, and with the article formed at its front with a fly closed at its upper and lower'ends.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of Wearing apparel including self adjusting means therefor when worn and with said means being concealed.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel including pockets having shiftable outer walls and hinged inner seams correlated with elastic elements coupled with said walls and'the Waist band of the article to allow for self adjustment of the latter to yieldingly snugly fit the waist of the wearer when the article is worn.

The invention further aims to providain a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel including means to form it with a several size range whereby the article is adaptable for use by wearers requiring a different size of article.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel including a slit pocket and with the garment including means correlated with one of the walls of the pocket to normally close the mouth of the latter, but which will permit the wearer to have convenient access to the contents of the pocket when desired.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of the class referred to including self-adjusting means to provide a snug yielding waist fit, when the article is worn, but at the same time preventing discomfiture to the wearer.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel including means to provide for self adjustment thereof to cause a yieldable snug waist fit and further to enable the wearer to have perfect freedom of motion when the article is fitted as aforesaid.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a self adjusting article of wearing apparel which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, readily assembled, pleasing and distinctive in appearance, worn without discomfiture, thoroughly efficient for the purpose intended thereby and inexpensive to manufacture.

Embodying the aims aforesaid and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein embodiments of the invention are shown, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

With reference to Figures 1 to 6, the article of wearing apparel illustrated thereby is generally indicated at I and it is to be constructed from any suitable fabric, plain or ornamental. The article I0 includes a split body formed of a. front and back portions II, I4 respectively separated at their sides, a waist band formed of a pair of sections I5, I6, a crotch IT, a closed top and bottom fly I8 and a pair of legs I 9, 20 of the desired length and which may or may not be formed with cuffs. As shown the legs I9, 20 are provided at their outer ends with the cuffs 2 I. The body portion II] at its front is formed with a pair of spaced parallel slits I2, I3 lengthwise thereof closed at their lower and open at their upper ends. The end edges of the waist band section I form continuations of the inner side edges of the slits I2, I 3. The end edges of the waist band section I6 form continuations of the outer side edges of the slits I2, I 3. The closed inner ends of the slits are reinforced by the stitching 26.

Arranged inwardly of the front portion II is a pair of oppositely disposed inner wall forming members 22, 23 for a pair of oppositely disposed pockets 32 The members 22, 23 extend across and are of greater length than the slits I-2, I3. The outer side edges of said members for a portion of'their length are secured to the outer side edges of the slits, and the said members depend below the closed ends of the slits. Interposed between the members 22, 23 and the inner face of the front portion II is a pair of oppositely disposed outer wall forming members 28, 29 for the said pair of pockets. The members 28, 29 correspond in contour to the members 22, 23, and have their outer side edges for a portion of their length secured to theinner side edges of the slits. The

members 28, 29 depend below the closed inner ends of the slits. The inner side edge of an inner wall forming member has the major portion thereof secured to the corresponding portion of the inner side edge of an outer wall forming member, as at 30, to form a hinge 30* between said members below their upper ends. The outer edge of an inner wall forming member below the closed end of a slit is secured, as at 3|, to the corresponding portion of the outer edge of an outer wall forming member. The bottom edge of an outer and an inner wall forming member are secured together, as at 32. The wall forming members 22, 23 extend to the upper end of the front portion II and form a lateral continuation of the outer face of the latter. The wall forming members 28, 29 extend to the upper end of the front portion II at the inner face of the latter. The slits I2, I3 form the entrances or mouths for the pockets 32 The waist band section I5 consists of an outer and an inner part 33, 34 respectively. The part 33 is formed from that part of the upper terminal portion of the front I I, which is arranged between the inner side edges of the slits I2, I3. The part 34 is formed of a strip of fabric and the upper portion of the members 28, 29. The fabric strip is secured against the inner face of front portion II in a manner to form a pocket or hem 35.

The waist band section I6 consists of an outer part 36 and an inner part 31. The part 36 is formed from the upper portions of the members 22, 23 and the upper part of the back portion I4. The part 3! is formed from a strip of fabric which is secured to members 22, 23 and the upper part of the back portion I4 to form a pair of pockets or hems 38 adjacent the members 22, 23.

The part has arranged on its inner face a pair of oppositely disposed inwardly extending flaps 28, 29, each having a portion of its outer side edge secured to a side edge of the part 25. The front faces of the extensions 22, 23 oppose the rear faces of the flaps 28, 29. Each extension correlates with a flap for a purpose to be referred to. The extensions correspond in contour and dimensions to the contour and dimensions of the flaps. The inner side edge of an extension has its lower portion secured to the lower portion of the inner side edge of its correlated flap, as at 30, to form a hinge connection between an extension and a flap. The extensions have side edge portions free of the sides I2, I3 and such edge portions are secured, as at 3|, to those parts of the outer edges of the flaps 28, 29, which are not secured to edges of the part 25 of the front I I. The bottom edges of the extensions and flaps are secured together, as at 32. An extension correlates with a flap to form a pocket having its mouth at the front of a side I2 or I3. The exten sions are the rear walls and the flaps are the front walls of the pockets 32 The pockets are arranged rearwardly of the front I I.

The upper portion of the part 25 of front II and the upper portions of the extensions 28, 29

provide the outer part 33 of the waist band section I5. The latter includes an inner part 34, in the form of a strip of fabric which is secured against the inner faces of said upper portions in a manner to form a pocket or hem 35.

Arranged. in the pocket is an elastic striplike member 42. having its ends extended from the openings 40, 4| and; provided with buttons 43, 44 respectively- The. member 42 is secured intermediate its ends to the waist. band section The waist band section. I6 in proximity to. its ends is formed with button holes 45,. 46. The inner part 31 of the waist band. section [6 is formed with a pair of' spaced aligned transverse openings 41, 481; one arranged rearwardly of and in. proximity to the button hole and the other rearwardly of and in proximity to button hole 46'. Arranged within the end terminal portions of section l6 are a pair of spaced oppositely disposed elastic members 49, 56 of strap-like form having their rear ends fixed to the waist band section Hi. The non-secured ends of the members 49, 55 are extended from the openings 41, 48 and have. secured thereto buttons 5|. 52 respectively;

The elastic members 42, 49, 50' provide means toform a yielding snug fit at the waist of the wearer. When the article is positioned on the wearer, the buttons 5|, 52 correlate with the button holes 39 for connecting the waist band section 5 to the waist band section l6 rearwardly of the ends of the latter, but the connection is an adjustable yielding one; and the buttons 43, 44 correlate with the button holes 45, 46 for connecting the waist band section l6 to the waist band section l5 forwardly of the ends of the latter, but the connection is an adjustable yielding one. The major portion of the means to provide for the aforesaid connections is concealed; the parts of such means being exposed are the buttons 5|, 52.

The members 47, 48, buttons 51, 52 and button holes 39 and the manner in which the walls of the pockets are connected together correlate for the shifting of the front walls of the pockets 32 when the garment is adjusted and further provide for such front'walls to yieldably engage the front of the garment to normally maintain the mouth of each pocket closed, but at the same time enabling one to conveniently extend the mouth of the pocket when desired.

The back M of the body of the article is provided with a pocket 53.

Fixedly secured, as at 53*, to the front and centrally of the Waist band section I5 is the central bar 54 of a buckle 55 of the loop type. There is correlated with the waist band of the article a belt 56 which extends through a series of spaced loops 51 disposed throughout the outer face of the waist band. The belt 56 has its end terminal portions 58 oppositely disposed for extension in opposite directions through the buckle 55, as is shown by Figure 3. When the portions 58 extend through the buckle 55 they are disposed in face-wise abutting relation, and when so disposed they maintain the belt in its adjusted position relative to the waist band.

The fly I8 is formed in and centrally of the front H and it is closed at its upper and lower ends.

'The arrangement. of. the inner wall. forming members; forthe pockets relative. to the. slits and their connection to. the outer side edges of the slits and: thecorrelation of the elastic members provide the: sides of the; garment with adjustable plackets.

With. reference to Figures 7 to 9, both inclusive, a. modified. form of an article of wearing-apparel accordance. with this. invention is shown. and it. is. generally indicated at 59. The latter is what may be termed the short type and it is substantially similar in construction to the article shown by Figure 1 with the exception that the article 59 is not provided with a fly, a back pocket and will have its legs free of cuffs, and shorter than the legs shown by Figure 1. A. further difference between the article 59 and the. form shown by Figure 1 is that the front waist band section 60 of article 59 will have tapered portion 6| at its ends to form tabs and that the button holes 6| in section 60 will be spaced inwardly from the portions 6!. Otherwise than that as stated, the construction of the form 59 will be the same as the article shown by Figure 1. The article 59 is designed for female use. The article 59 has its rear waist band section indicated at 62, its belt at 63, its buckle at 64, its front at 65, its sides at 66, 61, its back at 68, its pockets at 69 and its loops at 10.

The article of wearing apparel as heretofore set forth includes what may be termed a body part formed of a pair of sections; one extended from and shiftable relative to the other, a waist band formed of a pair of sections, each forming an upward continuation of a section of the body part and with the sections of the waist band having correlated means for forming a yieldable snug fit at the waist of the wearer when the article is worn and at the same time permitting of freedom of movement of the wearer without discomfiture.

With reference to Figure 10, a modified form of waistband is indicated at 63, but one-half of the waistband is shown. the half not shown will be of the same form as the half illustrated. The waistband 63 will be set up of a front section 65 and a rear section 64. The sections 64, 65 correspend in form as the waistband sections l5, l6 of the Waistband shown by Figure 3. The waistband 63 includes a pair of oppositely disposed elastic elements 66, only one shown arranged in the same manner as the elastic members 49, 5|] and an elastic element 61 arranged in the same manner as the elastic member 42. The elements 66 and 61 are constructed in a different manner than the elastic members 49, 50, 42. The said members are formed of a strip of elastic tape, whereas each of the elements 66 will consist of an elastic inner section 68 of tape-like form and an outer section 69 of strip-like form consisting of a piece of material corresponding to the material from which the garment is made. The inner end of section 69 is secured to the outer end of section 68. The latter is arranged within and has its inner end anchored to the waistband section 65. The section 69 is arranged within and extends from the waistband section 65. The section 69 has its outer terminal portion formed with a button hole 10. The element 61 is formed of a central section 1| and a pair of outer sections 12 (only one shown). The inner ends of the sections 12 are secured to the ends of the section I I. The latter is in the form of a length of elastic tape. Each of the sections 12 will be of strip-like form consisting of a piece of material corresponding to the'material from which the garment is made." The section H is arranged within, and centrally thereof it is secured to the waistband section 64. The sections 12 extend into and project from the waist-band section 64. Each section 12 has secured to its rear face apair of spaced buttons 13, M for selective coaction with a button hole 15 formed in the waistband section 65. Otherwise than as stated the waistband 63 will be constructed in the same manner as the waistband formed of the sections [5, I6, Figure 3. The elements 66, 61 are so constructed and arranged relative to the sections of the waistband 63 that the elastic sections of such element are always concealed. What I claim is:

1, In an article of wearing apparel, a body part, a waistband extended from said body part and formed of front and back sections, each of said sections having terminal portions, the terminal portions of the front section overlapping the terminal portions of the back section, a pair of elastic means anchored to, arranged within and extended outwardly from said back section at points rearwardly of the ends of the back section, said front section and elastic means having correlated parts for connecting the front section to the back section inwardly adjacent the ends of the latter, elastic means anchored to, arranged within and extended from the front section at spaced points of the latter inwardly adjacent the ends of such section, and said second mentioned elastic means and said back section having correlated means for connecting the ends of the back section to the front section inwardly adjacent the ends of the latter, each of said elastic means being in the form of a length of elastic tape.

2. In an article of wearing apparel, a body part, a waistband extended from said body part and formed of front and back sections, each of said sections having terminal portions, the terminal portions of the front section overlapping the terminal portions of the back section, a pair of elastic means anchored to, arranged within and extended outwardly from said back section at points rearwardly of the ends of the back section, said front section and elastic means having correlated parts for connecting the front section to the back section inwardly adjacent the ends of the latter, elastic means anchored to, arranged within and extended from the front section at spaced points of the latter inwardly adjacent the ends of such section, said second mentioned elastic means and said back section having correlated means for connecting the ends of the back section to the front section inwardly adjacent the ends of the latter, each of said elastic means of said pair of elastic means consisting of an inner section in the form of a strip of elastic tape and an outer section in the form of a substantially non-elastic fabric strip, the second mentioned elastic means consisting of an inner section in the form of a strip of elastic tape and a pair of outer sections each in the form of a substantially non-elastic fabric strip, and the said inner sections of the said several elastic means being permanently concealed in the sections of the waistband.
