Abstract

1,103,418. Gas analysis. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Feb. 3, 1966 [March 17, 1965], No. 4821/66. Heading G1B Apparatus for the volumetric determination of a gas in a mixture of gases comprises a first calibrated syringe 4 having a plunger 5, a conduit 16 containing a bed of solid absorbent 18 for the gas to be determined, a valve 8 having three ports 6, 10, 12 connected respectively to the syringe 4, one end of the conduit 16 and to the mixture of gases to be analyzed, the valve being operable to connect any two of its three parts, and a second syringe 28 having a plunger 29 connected to the other end of the conduit 16. In use, after equalization of pressures, the ports 10, 6 are connected and the plunger 5 withdrawn until it reaches a fixed stop 32 to draw in a known volume of the gaseous mixture. The ports 6 and 8 are then connected, the plunger 5 being used to force the gaseous mixture through the absorbent 18 into the syringe 28 and forcing out the plunger 29. This plunger is then used to return the gas to the syringe 4. After say two cycles the position of the plunger 5 indicates the volume of gas not absorbed, and the syringe 4 may be calibrated to read directly the percentage of the sample absorbed. Collapsible bellows may be used in place of the syringes if desired. The absorbent may be chromous chloride in silica gel for oxygen, calcium chloride or magnesium perchlorate for water vapour, soda lime or ascarite for carbon dioxide, or silica gel for ammonia or other basic gases.
