Abstract
In the removal by solid sorbents of a trace gas from a carrier gas, the concentration of the former being so low that the sorptive capacity of the sorbent decreases more than proportionally with decreasing trace gas concentration, there is added prior to sorption of said trace gas (a) a further quantity of said trace gas or (b) a gas having similar sorbability to said trace gas or (c) an isotope of said trace gas, in such quantity that the sorptive capacity of the sorbent in relation to the mixture of trace gas and additional gas is proportional to the concentration of said mixture. It is stated that the maximum degree of removal of trace gas may thus be increased. Several additional gases may if desired be added at different temperatures and pressures, but the added gas is preferably at the same temperature, pressure and humidity as the carrier gas. The invention may be applied to reduce the concentration of traces of radioactive krypton and xenon in a mixture of helium and neon used as cooling gas in a nuclear reactor, using charcoal or silica gel adsorbent at a temperature of 80 DEG K by addition of inactive krypton and/or xenon.
