Abstract
A gas chromatograph comprises at least two columns arranged in parallel at least two of <PICT:0873950/III/1> which contain different partitioning agents or alternatively at least one of which contains a partitioning agent and one does not contain a partitioning agent. As shown in the Figure, inert carrier gas from a source 10 passes through regulator 12 via line 16 into the columns 20, 22 and via line 18 into the reference cell of a gas detector 22. The sample is added to the carrier gas at 24 and variable flow restrictor 26, 28 are provided. The resolved gases leave through line 30 and pass through the sensing cell of detector 22, linked via a measuring circuit to recorder 36. The columns may be of different lengths, and one or more columns of the type described in Specification 834,390, in which the partitioning agent is supported on the inner surface, may be used. Specified sample gases are O2, N2 and CO2 (separated in two columns containing respectively silica gel and a zeolite) and O2, N2, CO, CH4 and up to C6 hydrocarbons (separated on two columns containing respectively a synthetic zeolite and dimethylsulphonane on a solid substrate). Where a column free from partitioning agent is used the portion of the total sample passing through the said column provides a single peak on the recorder the area of which is proportional to said portion and from which therefore the size of the sample may be calculated.
