Abstract
<PICT:0916590/III/1> Apparatus for analysing gases may comprise two chromatographic columns in series with an ionization tube 14 (see Group XL(a)). As shown, a sample of gas to be analysed is mixed with a carrier gas by means of a six-port valve 24 and passed into a partition column 30 comprising dibutylphthalate or silicon oil on granular fire brick or celite. Gases such as oxygen, argon and nitrogen migrate rapidly through column 30 or pass into an adsorption column 32 of a type employing zeolite, while other heavier gases having higher boiling points, such as propane which traverse column 30 more slowly, are reverse flushed by rotating valve 26, 90 degrees from the position shown through column 30 or out of the vent connected to valve 28. Final analysis of the gas is effected by use of a single ionization tube 14, or a plurality of such tubes connected in parallel. Specification 822,694 is referred to.
