Abstract
1446940 Gas chromatography COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE 9 Nov 1973 [10 Nov 1972] 52100/73 Heading B1H A process for analysing a mixture comprising at least one permanent gas (defined) and hydrocarbons by gas chromatography, comprises the steps of (a) introducing into a flow of carrier gas a sample of the mixture to be analysed at a temperature such that all the species present in the mixture are vaporized; (b) retaining the heavier hydrocarbons in a trap through which the permanent gases pass and any lighter hydrocarbons pass, (c) separating said lighter hydrocarbons in the trap or in a first column, (d) introducing the gases passing said trap and separated in said first column or said trap into a first detector and recording the identifying signals given off by said detector, (e) reversing the direction of flow of the carrier gas to free the heavier hydrocarbons from the trap, (f) separating said heavier hydrocarbons in at least one second column, and (g) passing the separated heavier hydrocarbons into a second detector and recording the identifying signals given off by said second detector. By "permanent" gases are meant hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and the noble gases. As described, a mixture of hydrogen and hydrocarbons is passed through an adsorbent trap in admixture with argon. Hydrogen, methane and ethane pass the trap and are conventionally separated in a first column and identified by katharometer. Alternatively the trap may separate these three gases in time so that they emerge successively. These gases then pass through a second column to a flame ionisation detector where the hydrocarbons are detected again. The argon flow is then reversed and the trap heated to free the adsorbed heavier hydrocarbons which are passed straight to the second column and flame ionisation detector.
