Abstract

The isotopes of hydrogen are separated by contacting gaseous hydrogen with an adsorbent comprising a metal forming a hydride and subsequently desorbing said hydrogen from said adsorbent by a process of chromatography. The invention may be applied to the separation of hydrogen from deuterium or tritium or of deuterium from tritium. Examples refer to the treatment of an equilibrium mixture of hydrogen, deuterium and hydrogen deuteride by passage through a tube filled with a palladium adsorbent supported on asbestos. After passage of the isotopic mixture, either pure hydrogen may be passed in or the tube may be gradually heated to 200 DEG C. to expel the adsorbed deuterium followed by hydrogen. It is stated that in general the isotope of a gaseous substance including in its molecule more than one atom of an element to be separated isotopically may be separated by contacting with an adsorbent selective for one of said forms, which also catalyses the conversion of molecules including more than one isotope of said element to molecules including only one isotope of said element.
