Abstract
The invention comprises water-soluble dyes of the general formula <FORM:1102990/C4-C5/1> wherein A is a benzene radical; B is an amino or a hydroxy naphthalene radical free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups which is bound to the azo group in the ortho or paraposition to the amino or hydroxyl group and which contains a sulphonamido, sulphonic acid ester or sulphone group in the naphthalene nucleus and optionally further substituents e.g. halogen, hydroxyl or alkoxy groups "alk" is an alkylene residue, R1, R2 and R3 are each alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl groups or R1, R2 and R3 may form a heterocycle with the nitrogen atom and X is an anion. They may be prepared by (a) diazotization of an appropriate amino ketone and coupling to an appropriate naphthalene compound; or (b) a mono azo dye Hal-Alk CO-A-N = N-B is reacted with a tertiary amine N(R1)(R2)(R3) preferably using an excess of amine in presence or absence of a solvent. Coupling preferably takes place in neutral to acid mediums and optionally in presence of pyridine or salts thereof. The dyes give orange, red, scarlet and brown shades on tannin-treated cellulosic fibres, silks, hair leather and synthetic e.g. polyacrylonitrile and polyvinylidene cyanide.
