Abstract

The invention comprises water-insoluble monoazo dyes of formula <FORM:0995306/C4-C5/1> wherein R is a benzene radical, Y is a hydrogen atom or a methoxy radical, R1 is a hydroxyl or cyano group and R2 and R3 which may be the same or different are alkyl, acetoxyethyl, cyanoethyl or methoxycarbonylethyl radicals and one of R2 and R3 may also be a hydrogen atom, but excluding dyestuffs of the general formula <FORM:0995306/C4-C5/2> wherein R1 is a 2,4-dinitro-6-halophenyl, 2-cyano - 4 - nitro - 6 - halophenyl or 2 - cyano - 4-nitrophenyl radical, R1 is as defined above, X is a hydrogen atom or an alkoxy radical, R4 is an alkyl radical and R5 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or cyanoethyl radical or the radical -CH2CH2COOR4, said dyes being free from COOH and SO3H groups. The dyes are prepared by coupling a diazo compound of an amine R-NH2 with an appropriately substituted m-phenylene-diamine. They are used to colour polyester fibres in red and blue shades. A number of dyes are specified in examples.
